The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved a weight-loss drug to be used in the U. S.
The drug, known as Orlistat, was approved by the FDA in the U. and was approved to be sold as Xenical.
"The FDA approved the drug with the greatest weight loss potential in the U. S.," FDA Commissioner Bruce P. Hinkley said in a statement.
"It has been a long time coming, but it is still a long time coming."
Orlistat is a prescription weight loss medication and is not currently sold as a drug.
It is not currently approved for use in the U. and is not yet available on the U. market.
"We urge consumers to consult their doctor before taking any weight loss medication, including orlistat," the FDA said.
The drug is not available over the counter.
Hinkley said the FDA is taking steps to ensure that consumers have access to the drug and to ensure that those who buy prescription medications are aware of the risks.
The company said that it is reviewing whether a new clinical trial that could be used to show the drug's effectiveness with the general population could be approved by the FDA, as it was on Oct. 13.
